The Chair and Department of Pathophysiology continue the scientific and didactic activity initiated in 1921 by the Department of General Pathology of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Poznań. Initially, it was located at Collegium Maius, starting from 1959 at Collegium Anatomicum, and from 2015 at the Medical Biology Center of the Medical University in Poznań.
The research work carried out in recent years at the Department of Pathophysiology concerns various aspects of the pathophysiology of peritoneal dialysis, endothelial cell dysfunction, cell ageing processes and chronobiology. Research is carried out based on national and international grants. Very important in the scientific activity of the unit was and is scientific cooperation with foreign university research centers in Toronto (Canada), Cardiff (Great Britain), Berlin and Heidelberg (Germany), Stockholm (Sweden), Aichi, Kanazawa and Kyoto ( Japan). One of the pioneers of modern peritoneal dialysis, Prof. DG. Oreopoulos, from the University of Toronto, who, together with the employees of the Department and Department of Pathophysiology, published 80 scientific papers, received in 2003 an Honorary Doctorate of the Poznan University of Medical Sciences.
The Chair and Department of Pathophysiology conduct didactic classes in pathophysiology; in medical faculties, in programs for Polish-speaking and English-speaking students. Starting from 2010, teaching is also carried out with the use of e-learning methods based on the platform https://www.estudent.ump.edu.pl
